I had lasik surgery in 2002 and a free flap happened in my left eye. No reference marks were made. An enhancement was done in 2003 on both eyes. I am still having problems with several things in my left eye such as smeery, vaseline vision, color contrast, cloudiness, depth perception, etc., along with the ghosting, halos, and starbursts. Some times I have trouble focusing and feel as if someone has something just an inch or two from my face and I need to close my eyes or cover my left eye to try to focus. Has anyone had any experience with this type of problem(no reference marks made and a free flap occurs). Why would my surgeon not use reference marks? I am having trouble finding anything on this type of complication. It seems that when I hear of a free flap that happens-they know how to place it back on correctly. I had astigmatism before and now they say I have irregular astigmatism. Any comments or advice would be appreciated.

Thank you Dr. Q, for your reply. I have an appointment next week with a specialist for an evaluation. Thanks again! Delow

Hi Delow,

I am sorry to hear of your difficulties after LASIK. Typically, a free cap alone does not lead to all of the problems you are having.

My suggestion would be to seek a second opinion from another surgeon who is willing to do a comprehensive evaluation for you. From your post, I would want to obtain a wavefront analysis of your vision and corneal topography (these would help evaluate the nature of your irregular astigmatism), along with a detailed microscopic examination of your flap (looking for alignment problems or small wrinkles called striae, among other things). Also, the smeery, vaseline vision you describe is often the result of untreated dryness after surgery, so I would want to test that as well. In addition, we would need to see if any residual nearsightedness, farsightedness or regular astigmatism was present and how well you could see the eye chart with your best glasses correction. These tests and more would allow us to diagnose your situation and discuss any possible treatments.

I hope this gets you started in the right direction. As you are aware, it is impossible to diagnose and treat over the net, but sometimes just asking the right questions of your local doctor is half the battle.

As for the alignment marks, I am not sure why they would not have been made. I always make them.

Please keep us up-to-date as you learn more. So far, it appears you are at a point that you know you have irregular astigmatism, but you don't know exactly why you have it or if there are any possible treatments.

Best regards,

Dr. Q
